--Disease Characteristics--

* Meets modified New York diagnostic criteria
* Active disease, i.e., morning stiffness for more than 30 minutes
* Failed or experienced nonlife-threatening reaction to prior sulfasalazine
* No significant hematologic, hepatic, or renal disease
