The periodontal intervention involves periodontal therapy ie scaling and root planing of a participant's teeth and gums. It occurs at baseline and takes around half an hour to an hour. A registered dental hygienest provides the care.

The usual course of care, which in this case is no care. Periodontal services are not provided in the general course of care remit of publicly funded dental services who provide dental care to Aboriginal populations.

Indigenous persons aged 25+ years that have lived in their current location for 2+ years, and who plan to live at their current location for the next 2 years, with moderate/severe periodontal disease

Key exclusion criteria
Those with rheumatic heart disease history or other cardiac conditions requiring antibiotic prophylaxis for prevention of subacute bacterial endocarditis, or with obvious endodontic lesions or other sources of oral infection.
