Description of intervention(s) / exposure
An Early Supported discharge (ESD) service for stroke will be evaluated according to a set of internationally determined criteria. Staff points of view regarding the criteria will also be investigated including their importance and applicability to the West Australian practice environment. Data collection will occur over a 4-6 week period involving secondary data analysis of health service and patient data from 2005 to 2010 and collection of focus group data from service staff in a mixed methods study. Quantitative data will be accessed from the ESD service database and the south metropolitan area health service.

Comparator / control treatment
Components of an effective ESD team have been agreed by Delphi consensus of 10 experts that have conducted randomised controlled trails of ESD vs convential inpatient rehabilitation. The components are divided into 4 main areas - team composition, model of working, intervention and measures of success. Staffing levels, number of disciplines, outcome measures collected and length of stay data are some of the types of comparators that will be used.
Control group
Uncontrolled

Outcomes
Primary outcome [1] 262057 0
Presence or absence of consensus components in the team including measures of number of disciplines, ratio of staff to 100 patients per year, presence of team coordinator, weekly meeting schedule, hospital base, patient eligibility criteria, liaison with inpatient staff and outcome measures collected. Rates of hospital length of stay for stroke patients, hospital readmission rates and inpatient length of stay will also be compared to the consensus guidelines.
Timepoint [1] 262057 0
Baseline
Secondary outcome [1] 273066 0
Understanding of the ESD staff's point of view regarding the importance of the consensus components for their practice context. This will be collected by focus group sessions segmentalised into managers and staff from each hospital base in the service.

Summary
Brief summary
This study will evaluate an early supported discharge service for stroke using a recently compiled list of components identified by experts in stroke research. In order to understand the achievement or otherwise of these components, a mixed methods approach will be used involving secondary analysis of health service data and focus group discussions of early supported discharge service staff.
