Intervention/exposure
Study type
Interventional
Description of intervention(s) / exposure
Each infant will have his/her temperature taken, first using the digital thermometer under the axilla and then by the infra-red non-contact thermometer via the forehead area.
Only one temperature will be taken and this will be on admission to the neonatal unit.
Intervention code [1] 289963 0
Treatment: Devices
Comparator / control treatment
The use conventional thermometer under the axilla, which is currently in use on the neonatal unit.

Data analysis
Numerical data will be described using mean and SD or median in interquartile range (IQR) depending on the
distribution.
The Bland and Altman (1986) approach for comparing measurement devices will be utilised for individual
comparison of each thermometer.
In order to detect a mean difference of 0.3C between the axilla and forehead and SD of 0.6, with a power of 80% and 5% level of significance, a sample size of 90 was calculated for each group.

Summary
Brief summary
The study will compare a non contact infrared thermometer (temple) with a conventional thermometer used on the
neonatal unit and evaluate levels of agreement.
The use of the non-contact thermometer will ensure minimal disturbance to infants. All Infants admitted to the special care nursery will be able to participate in the study. Temperature recordings will be recoded at each care
time. Each infant will be enrolled for the period of time it takes to obtain temple and axilla temperature.
We hyponthesize that the non-contact thermometer will be in agreement with the reference thermometer therefore enabling its use in this population.
