Description of intervention(s) / exposure
The Skin Cancer College of Australasia has compiled a new proposed mnemonic entitled SCAN (Sore, Changing, Abnormal, New) for skin self-examination. This educational tool was developed to help individuals estimate their risk and recognise the early signs of skin cancer. The objective of this study is to undertake a qualitative investigation on satisfaction with the SCAN rule in comparison to other well known skin self examination tools for skin cancer early detection.
We aim to conduct focus groups, with each participant to only attend one focus group. The focus groups will be held in person at the Translational Research Institute, Woolloongabba, Brisbane. Approximately, 6-8 participants will be invited to attend each group and will last approximately 60 minutes. After providing written consent, participants will be asked to complete a short survey assessing basic demographics, skin cancer history and previous skin checking habits at the start of the focus group. The facilitator will follow a semi-structured format and follow the discussion guide. Topics in the discussion guide include self-examination practices, use of education tools for skin self-examination and the use of pictures to optimise understanding.
The assistant facilitator will audio record the focus group and takes notes.

Statistical methods / analysis
After each focus group, the facilitator and the assistant will debrief to document observations about focus group processes, dynamics, content and initially emerging patterns. The qualitative data will be analysed using content analysis by following a process of searching text, for recurring words, concepts or ideas.

Summary
Brief summary
The aim of the study is to undertake a qualitative investigation on how well people understand each of the various education tools for skin self-examination, whether they find one more intuitively appealing or acceptable than another, Who is it for? You may be eligible for this study if you are aged over 18 years or over and speak sufficient English. Study details All participants will take part in a 60 minute audio-recorded focus group at the Translational Research Institute, Woolloongabba, Brisbane. Participants will be asked to complete a demographic survey at the start of the focus group. Discussion includes self-examination practices and the use of educational tools for skin self-examination. This research will be used to determine how well people understand each of the various mnemonics used in Australia and influence future design and implementation of skin cancer early detection support for people.
