Description of intervention(s) / exposure
This is a qualitative study that will explore the context, causes and consequences of gambling-related suicide in Australia. Three main categories of participants will be recruited to one-on-one semi-structured in-depth interviews. These are 1) people who have experienced gambling-related self harm or suicidality; 2) people who have been bereaved by gambling-related suicide 3) professionals who are working to prevent suicide and/or gambling harm, such as help professionals, police, coronial staff, regulators and policy makers. Interviews will conducted by PI Rintoul who has been certified in mental health first aid and has conducted around 200 interviews with people who gamble. Each interview will take around 1 hour. Each participant will be interviewed once.
Recruitment of adults (18 years+) in Groups 1 and 2 will occur primarily through lived experience groups. Potential participants will be provided with a URL linked to an Qualtrics form where they provided with information about the study. Consenting participants will complete a brief online form (including socio economic, demographic, and gambling information) about themselves (Grp1) or their loved one (Grp2) and their contact information. Participants may also contact Principal Investigator (PI: Rintoul) directly using contact information provided on the recruitment material if they are unable to easily complete this due to internet accessibility issues. Interviews will include questions related to their:
• gambling experiences and perspectives;
• gambling-related suicide/suicidality (thoughts or suicide attempts); and,
• suggestions for preventing gambling-related suicide.
Group 3 will be purposively sample adults (18 years+) through existing professional networks and snowball techniques. Group 3 participants will be provided with a URL linked to a Qualtrics form containing professional and demographic questions and will be asked provide their contact information. Interviews will cover questions related to their:
• their role and the support or services relating to gambling or suicide prevention;
• processes and systems for identifying gambling-related suicide/suicidality (thoughts or suicide attempts); and,
• suggestions for preventing gambling-related suicide.
Consenting participants meeting the inclusion criteria will be followed up to arrange an interview which will be conducted over the telephone or using internet based video conferencing.

Summary
Brief summary
Gambling-related suicide has been underestimated and few systemic responses are in place to support those experiencing suicidality. The study aims to understand the relationship between gambling and suicide; and, contribute evidence to prevent gambling-related suicide to inform system-wide responses to these preventable deaths. The project will use a descriptive qualitative approach. Adult participants (18 years+) from three key groups located in Australia will be recruited to share their experiences and insights into this problem via a one-to-one semi-structured interview. Participants will be asked to describe their experiences with gambling, suicide or suicidality, their understanding of the relationship between gambling and suicide. Interviews will also seek to document how these participants perceive current gambling arrangements and how this may contribute to stigma and shame.
