Description of intervention(s) / exposure
Early trophic feed initiation will be done according to birth date admitted on their 1st or 2nd day of life comprising of expressed breast milk given at <48 hours postntal age of preterm infant delivered by Nursing staff in neonatal unit through Nasogastric tube every 2 hourly 1 to 2 ml in amount with a total of 12 feeds in 24 hours. Increasing the Nasogastric feeding daily by 2 ml till the end of stay or when neonate is able to tolerate oral feed.

Late trophic feed initiation will be done according to birth date admitted on their 2nd or 3rd day of life comprising of expressed breast milk given at > 72 hours postnatal age of preterm infant by Nursing staff in neonatal unit through Nasogastric tube every 2 hourly. Each feed is 1 to 2 ml in amount administered 2 hourly with a total of 12 feeds in 24 hours.

Summary
Brief summary
COMPARISON OF EARLY VERSUS LATE INITIATION OF TROPHIC FEEDING IN PRETERM INFANT: Preterm infant is defined by WHO as an infant delivered before 37 weeks of gestation. Nutrition in the postnatal period is essential to achieve optimal growth and development of preterm infants. The timing of introduction of feeds and the rate of advancement of those feeds in preterm infants are however controversial. Enteral feed aids in the development of gut in preterm infants and lowers the risk of infections and sepsis. Trophic feeding is the practice of feeding small amounts of enteral feeds to preterm infants to stimulate the enzyme activity, hormone release, blood flow, motility and microbial flora of their immature gastrointestinal tract. HYPOTHESIS: Early initiation of Trophic feeding(<48hrs postnatal age) as compared to Late(>72hrs postnatal age) of preterm infants is associated with less duration of stay in neonatal unit and improved survival of preterm infants. STUDY DESIGN: Comparative study of early versus late trophic feed introduction in preterm infants. STUDY PURPOSE To assess improved preterm survival with early trophic feed introduction from less duration of hospital stay.
